Swipe Away Student Hunger

Hunger is a growing problem for students on college campuses across the nation, and the College of Charleston is no exception.

A student may lose a job because the business closed. Family financial situations can change overnight due to job loss, illness, or death. As college costs increase, fewer students can afford to purchase a meal plan. These are just a few of the reasons students at the College of Charleston may face food insecurity. Our goal is to create a safety net to ensure emergency assistance is available quickly and confidentially. Help us end student hunger at the College of Charleston by making a donation to the Student Alumni Associates' campaign to Swipe Away Student Hunger at CofC. You may donate with a credit card online here.

Each student meal typically costs around $10. SAA's goal is to fund 500 meals for their classmates for Academic Year 2018-19. Student Affairs working with Financial Aid will assess each student's need and use these funds to assign meals to the student's Cougar Card. Your donation through this site is made to the College of Charleston Foundation, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, and is tax deductible as allowed by law.

Please give generously and share this with fellow students and alumni via social media so we can end food insecurity at the College of Charleston!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Some colleges are setting up food banks. Has CofC considered this option?
Yes, and this will be part of our comprehensive solution to ending student food insecurity, along with providing meals in the dining halls. At CofC, many students don't have access to a kitchen to store and prepare food. Considering these factors, meals through the College dining program are the most cost effective and efficient option for CofC. It is also confidential and treats the students with dignity, loading meals onto their Cougar Cards to be swiped just like other students with meal plans.

How will the funds be distributed to students?
Students will complete an application through Student Affairs and Financial Aid will verify the need. Applications are completely confidential and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine the number of meals to be provided. Once approved, the meals will be applied to the students' Cougar Cards, like other students with meal plans.

Is my donation tax deductable?
Yes, the Foundation is a 501(c)3 charitable organization, so your donation is deductible for income tax purposes to the extent allowed by law. Please check with your tax professional for details.
